Guatemala is a Country in Central America. Guatemala is a constitutional democratic republic whereby the President of Guatemala is both head of state and head of government, and of a multi-party system.

In 2015, then Guatemalan President Otto Pérez Molina and his Vice President Roxana Baldetti were arrested following revelations into a customs fraud network they allegedly oversaw. The level of Corruption of Guatemala Government Officials is now wide spread throughout the country.

The territory of modern Guatemala once formed the core of the Mayan civilization, which extended across Mesoamerica. Most of the country was conquered by the Spanish in the 16th century, becoming part of the viceroyalty of New Spain. Guatemala attained independence in 1821 as part of the Federal Republic of Central America, which dissolved in 1841.

From 1960 to 1996, Guatemala endured a bloody civil war fought between the US-backed government and leftist rebels, including massacres of the Mayan population perpetrated by the military.

Since a United Nations-negotiated peace accord, Guatemala has witnessed both economic growth and successful democratic elections, though it continues to struggle with high rates of poverty, crime, drug trade, and instability.

Guatemala Travel and Tourism Facts.

Livingston is one of Guatemala’s gems tucked away on the Caribbean coast, and can only be reached by boat. Fortunately, two ferries head out and back each and every day.

Monterrico is a bit off the beaten path of Pacific coastal Guatemala. However we do love to go onece every few months for fish. With beautiful black sand, volcanic beaches and far fewer faces than you’ll spot at some other beaches

The portal of Lake Atitlan is loved in the city of Pananajachel, is also a destination for Tourists seeking to visit  an indigenous world of the Mayans and other ancient peoples.
