Most tourists stick to the well-worn path of bars and restaurants lining the main strip near the San Pedro La Laguna dock, never realizing that some of the town’s best-kept secrets lie just a little farther down the road, past the bustle of hostels and coffee shops, towards the Santiago dock.
One of my favorite spots in this lesser-explored part of San Pedro is
Anaffes, a locally owned Indian restaurant that serves up incredible curries, naan, and spicy masalas. It’s a cozy, inviting place with an authentic touch, and on weekends, the air is filled with the sound of live music, adding to its warm and vibrant atmosphere. It’s the perfect spot to unwind, enjoying a rich plate of chicken tikka masala while sipping on a cold beer or a freshly brewed chai.
A little further down the road, past Anaffes, sits The Clover Restaurant, an underrated gem offering a wide selection of Asian cuisine. If you’re craving Thai green curry, Japanese ramen, or a steaming bowl of Vietnamese pho, this is the place to be. The owner has a deep passion for authentic Asian flavors, and it shows in every dish served. It’s quiet, relaxed, and the kind of spot where you can easily lose track of time while savoring a delicious meal.
Continuing towards the Santiago dock, you’ll stumble upon El Barrio, a beloved local haunt where the town’s energy truly comes alive. With big-screen TVs playing football matches, a dartboard in the corner, and a pool table that sees friendly competition night after night, it’s where both locals and those in the know come to hang out. The food is top-notch—burgers, tacos, and nachos that pair perfectly with an ice-cold beer or a strong cocktail.
Right across from El Barrio, you’ll find Ola Bar, the perfect spot for late-night music and fun. This place comes alive after dark, with a mix of DJs and live bands setting the stage for an unforgettable night. Whether you’re in the mood for dancing, meeting new people, or just enjoying the vibe of a laid-back lakeside town, Ola Bar has something for everyone.
These spots are the hidden gems of San Pedro La Laguna, places where you can experience the town beyond the usual tourist circuit. They offer great food, great company, and a chance to see a side of San Pedro that many travelers overlook. The next time you find yourself in town, take a walk past the main drag and discover the other side of San Pedro—you won’t regret it.
