Santa Catarina Palopó is a municipality in the Sololá department of Guatemala. The municipality is located on the shores of Lake Atitlán, approximately 3 miles southeast of Panajachel, a popular tourist destination.
To its southeast is San Antonio Palopó. The three aforementioned towns are connected by one paved road, which runs directly through Santa Catarina Palopó.
Perhaps the most easily recognizable characteristic of Santa Catarina Palopó is the blue huipil, or blouse, which is worn prominently by the women of the community.
Since the huipil has been worn since the 16th century, it may seem to be a particularly indigenous trait, but the blue style is, however, the result of very recent external influences.
San Lucas Toliman is on the far end of Lake Lake Atitlan. The village is not a main Tourist attraction. We often spend time at the beach on Toliman enjoying Ceviche from local vendors on weekends.
At 1,700 metres (5,600 ft) altitude the town offers “eternal spring” with annual temperatures ranging from 50 to 80 degrees F. The dry season runs from November through June/July (called “summer” locally) and the rainy season runs the other six months (“winter”).
The area is free of malaria due to its elevation. The area’s elevation ranges from 1,562 metres (5,125 ft) along the lake to 3,144 metres (10,315 ft) at the summit of Volcán Tolimán. Volcán Tolimán is just west of town.
