Hiking Trekking Lake Atitlan Guatemala I’ve always been a high energy person.  As a child, I drove my parents crazy with my energy level.  Always curious to explore my world vertically, I was in constant motion performing jumps and flips on the couch cushions, climbing the tallest trees, and climbing up on the barn roof to help my father shingle it (so what that I was only 2 years old).  I often exhausted my mother and had my father shaking his head on more than one occasion.

I think the final straw for my parents came when I shimmed my way up the 60-foot tree in the front yard and was unable to get myself down.  For an instant, I had that heart-in-the-mouth moment and that dreaded feeling of climbing so high that I couldn’t get down.  And then came that exhilarating feeling of looking out at the vast expanse in front of me and seeing the most incredible bird’s eye view of the world below.

My mother arrived on the scene and I will diplomatically say she had a sense of humor failure. Needless to say, my father was instructed to get the tractor with the front end loader and get me down and out of that tree.  What can I say…I was only 5 years old and in my defense, as I mentioned, “what a view I had from the top of that tree.”

There is just something so irresistible about finding the right little notches to place your feet, and the right branches to pull yourself up and of course, there is that feeling that comes from making it to the top and being rewarded with the most incredible view.

And that is where my love of adventure began.  Since that time climbing has taught me so many lessons that can be applied in everyday life.

The Truths About Life That I Have Learned From Hiking and Trekking Lake Atitlan

One Step at a Time – When you’re climbing a mountain or a tree for that matter, and it looks insurmountable, like life at times, take a moment to look down and see how far you have come instead of focusing solely on how far you still have to go.

Don’t Focus on The End Destination, Enjoy The Journey – It’s the journey that matters, which teaches you the most. Like that small child trying to find the right little notches on the tree to place her feet or the right branches to pull herself up, it is the small intermittent successes and the failures during the journey where you gain your strength, overcome your weaknesses, learn new insights, and realize your passions.

Obstacles Can Be Overcome – Whether you come across obstacles on the side of a mountain, a trail, or in life your success is determined by your reaction to them.  You can either change your direction to reach your goal, go over or around it, or you can be blocked by it.

What’s Important to Carry With You and What’s Not – Life is like a backpack that you carry on a climb or hike, so much depends on what you put into it and how you prepare.  You cannot get to the top of the mountain easily if you are carrying a backpack full of useless things.  Learn to lighten your load and carry only what is needed for the journey, don’t pack everything and take it up the mountain with you.

Your Ego Will Have a Direct Effect On Your Success – You will make mistakes and you will fail. That’s how you learn, it’s how you grow and become a better person.  Take the bruised ego and hurt pride out of it and leave it behind.

Step Out of Your Comfort Zone – It’s easy to get stuck in a rut.  Most people tend toward the familiar and the routine, basically, the safe and easy path and they do this all in an effort to avoid discomfort.  Keeping things safe and comfortable is a sure recipe for no growth.  Often the best thing for us is to step out of that comfort zone—and into the unknown.

Blaze Your OWN Trail – Along the paths in life, we travel we will come across a variety of options.  Some roads will be paved and well-traveled and some will be less traveled dirt paths.  Other times, though, if you want to reach the summit of the mountain or create the life you desire, you will need to blaze your own path through the dense underbrush and venture into unknown territory.

The All-Important Patience, Persistence, Humility, and Gratitude – Climbing mountains and climbing trees, like life, with its ever-changing terrain, can be exhausting and demands that we adapt.  The forks in the path that we encounter are moments of decision and demand patience and persistence, where unexpected turns can lead to life-changing moments.

Climbing mountains, climbing trees, and life all challenge you physically and mentally, they make you question yourself, your stamina, and your strength and they have a way of keeping you humble. And there is nothing like the gratitude felt when reaching your goal, achieving your dream, and realizing that you can do anything that you set your mind to.

From the age of 5 years old when I made it successfully to the top of the 60-foot tree, I learned that your dreams can come true if you have the courage to pursue them.

Fast forward 45 years and it shouldn’t really come as a surprise that I find myself living in the highlands of Guatemala, where my childhood love of climbing trees has morphed into a love of climbing mountains.  I can tell you from experience that Hiking & Trekking Lake Atitlan in the Sierra Madre mountain range brings new challenges, excitement, and extraordinary feelings of accomplishment each time that I stand on the trail summit looking at the whole world below me.

It’s my “pinch-me moment”, you know one of those moments in time that you have to pinch yourself to believe it is real.  It’s the same feeling whether I am high above the ground in a 60-foot tree as a 5-year-old or climbing vertically up a 5,000-foot mountain.

In fact, I find I get the same feeling when I’m jumping out of airplanes.  Oh, but that’s a whole other story…
