Mayan Herbalist Plant Identification
If you’ve ever wanted to learn how to identify traditional herbs used to create medicine, then this is the day for you.
On this half-day excursion, you will have the opportunity to visit an all-women herbal co-operative in the beautiful town of San Juan.
You will have a tour of the garden which grows medicinal herbs like lemon balm, yarrow, and milk thistle.
You will also learn to identify traditional plants of Lake Atitlan, like Apsote and Plantain. The herbs that grow here are directly used to make hundreds of different medicine and beauty products on-site.
There will be a talk, which will cover identification and the traditional uses of the plants within the garden.
You will also have an opportunity to ask questions in Spanish. or through our local translator. This is an opportunity to learn about traditional medicine with traditional Tzutujil women of the lake, in a supportive and calm environment.
You will receive a book on Natural Healing by Richard J. Morgan Szybist to follow throughout the tour, take home, and relate to afterward. This covers the indigenous history of the lake and includes pictures of local plants to identify flora.
“For the last 17 years, we offered introductions to the Mayan Culture Natural Medicines for those serious about taking care of their mind and bodies naturally.”
Working directly with Mayan Priests, Shamans, and Healers we gained even more knowledge of the healing powers of the Mayan People.
“The offering we are presenting on this page is to share Mayan ancient knowledge in an accessible and structured program.”
“You will learn the entire process of making medicinal treatments that have existed since 2600BC, directly from the Mayan healers we work closely with.”
The ancient Maya perceived health as “balance”, whereas illness and disease were “imbalance”. Mayan medical texts are devoted to the treatment of symptoms based upon the effects of certain herbal remedies which could be swallowed, smoked, snorted, rubbed on the skin, and even given as enemas.
One finds on Social Media and other offerings the opportunity to learn about Mayan Natural Medicines, including courses, retreats, and immersions. There is a fad about Natural Medicine, and most of these offerings offer little long-term results.
Lake Atitlán (Spanish: Lago de Atitlán, [atiˈtlan]) is a lake in the Guatemalan Highlands of the Sierra Madre mountain range. It is in the Sololá Department of southwestern Guatemala. It is the deepest lake in Central America.
