Art has always played an important part in Tz’utujil indigenous people’s lives.

Through paintings Tz’utujil indigenous artists tell their stories, portray their culture, and depict everyday life connecting the past and the present.

For the last 15 years,  Vilma Matzar Sumoza has been showcasing paintings created by her and her partner Juan Bautista in their studio in San Pedro.

Her San Pedro La Laguna Artist Gallery has been showcasing paintings created by Vilma Matzar and her partner Juan Bautista in their studio in San Pedro.

Located in the village of SanPedro La Laguna is Gallery A’xuaan Hi, a Tz’utujil owned and operated gallery that offers an inspiring cultural visit for all.

Vilma Matzar Sumoza, and her staff create oil paintings that are sold in studios and galleries in Guatemala City, Antigua, Xela, Panajachel, and San Pedro.

The best way to describe the method of application that uses is that she applies the paint using a trowel or paint knife rather than a brush.

San Pedro La Laguna is a village of 13,000 located on the southwest shore of Lake Atitlán under the watchful eye of the San Pedro Volcano.

The inhabitants of San Pedro are primarily Tz’utujil Maya.

The village’s affordable prices, tranquil setting, and natural beauty attract a mix of cultural enthusiast, backpackers, and Spanish immersion students.

The village of San Pedro La Laguna on Lake Atitlan is one of my favorite villages on the Lake.  San Pedro in its earlier years was the home for many hippie travelers—that was 20 years ago.

Today, San Pedro still remains a destination for the younger travelers and backpackers that visit Lake Atitlan.

San Pedro is located at the foot of San Pedro Volcano which provides a beautiful back drop for the village.

For the adventurous San Pedro Volcano provides a wonderful opportunity to hike and see one of the most spectacular sunrises that the lake has to offer.
