Guatemala Family Vacation | Woodstock New York
Our love affair with Guatemala first began 30 years ago when we traveled to Guatemala as backpacking tourists. We fell in love with the people, the landscapes, the markets, the colors, the weaving, and we ended up purchasing a vacation home in the village of Santa Catarina Palopo.
Each year, for the next 10 years, we returned and helped in the community, built a home for a local family in the village and enjoyed the special experiences that only Guatemala provides.
As life would have it, our lives changed in the United States, we ended up selling our home in Guatemala, purchasing a restaurant in New York, and our time to travel each year eventually came to an end.
Fast forward 20 years, and we find ourselves traveling back to Guatemala with our 11-year old daughter in tow. For years our daughter had heard our stories of wonderfully magical times at Lake Atitlan and a saw a few now tattered pictures—our precious memories of the our life and the people who were so special to us.
Guatemala Family Vacation time to return to Lake Atitlan
Deciding it was time to return to an area of the world that held such precious memories for us and to introduce our daughter to friends from long ago and as it turned out to meet new friends.
We contacted a local tour company, Lake Atitlan Tours hoping to get help in finding the families and friends from long ago. Jim and Kara replied to our requests and began searching for us prior to our arrival.
With limited information to go on they managed to locate the family we had built a home for in Santa Catarina Palopo and reconnect us with others.
We spent two amazing weeks touring and revisiting a place we love with Jim and Kara. Here is our story.
Travel uplifts every aspect of our existence because our awareness’s let us leave our everyday live’s on hold and move us towards being ever present in the moments of our new now.
We welcome to our senses the excitement of all that we see, taste, hear, smell, feel and the indigenous people we interact with.
So imagine enriching those experiences, enter Kara and Jim whom’s touring business did more than that for us.
We logged many walking miles per day visiting wonderful people and spots of interest everyday.
This time was magical for our daughter a real trooper being eager to learn and absorb from their knowledge and expertise.
The meals together, their friends and contacts made the week fly by too quickly but we there in the moment enjoying it all very much thanks to them. WJD.
