Located in the heart of Xela, Guatemala, Kamalbe Spanish School is a small independent Spanish school that has received certification from the Guatemalan Ministry of Education.
The Kamalbe Spanish School was established in 2005 to offer high-quality Spanish instruction and volunteer opportunities in Quetzatelnango while investing time and resources to assist regional populations to get access to education and social services.
The word “kamalbe” is derived from the K’iche language, which is the traditional tongue of the native Mayans residing in and around Xela.

About Xela or the formal name of Quetzaltenango
The abbreviated form of the word Xelaju—pronounced “SHAY-la”—was the name of the city before the Spaniards took control of it in the early 1500s.
Quetzaltenango, the city’s new name given by the Spanish conquistadors, loosely translates to “the castle of the Quetzal bird,” Guatemala’s national bird.
The city is still frequently referred to by its original name, Xelaju or Xela, which in the K’iche language of the locals means “neath the seven mountains.”
There are many hiking paths near Xela, stunning mountaintop views, natural sauna experiences, and much more.
The Pacific Coast’s black sand beaches and Lago Atitlan are both just a few hours’ drive from the city.
