Eating Guatemala Street Food?
Should You be Eating Guatemala Street Food? Many travelers when they first come to Lake Atitlan are concerned about getting sick from eating the food, especially from street vendors. In the five years that I have lived at Lake Atitlan, I can say that I have never gotten ill from the street food, and typically I eat street food at least once a week.
Consider this, most of the food that the street vendors sell has been butchered, cleaned, and prepared that very same day.
The food that the street vendors sell at their booths ranges from simple booths that sell tacos, enchiladas, rellenitos de plátano, chuchitos, elote, and pupusa to small temporary sidewalk restaurants that specialize in meat and chicken plates. Many traditional foods in Guatemalan cuisine are based on Mayan cuisine and prominently feature corn, chilies, and beans as key ingredients.

Venturing out at night in Panajachel is an adventure not to be missed. Typically Thursday evenings bring out the largest crowds that saunter Avenida Santander, the main street in downtown Pana in search of the best street food in the area. Vendors usually start setting up their stalls around 7:00 pm.
Locals come from the villages of Santa Catarina Palopó and San Antonio Palopó to partake in the festivities which feels more like a progressive dinner party that slowly moves from one stall to the next. Some of the vendors have a few chairs set up that you can sit on while you enjoy their home-made specialties.
Atole de arroz is a hot drink and fresco is a cold drink both of which you can find at the different vendor stalls throughout Pana, both are unique and delicious. If it’s a beer that you are hankering for, both Gallo and Brava can be found at most Tiendas along with Avenida Santander.
