Sumpango’s Festival, also known as the “Giant Kite Festival,” is a cultural event that takes place on November 1 each year. One day, people from the town gather at the soccer field next to the town’s cemetery to take part in a giant kite contest.

Each kite has been made for several months and is graded on both creativity and flight length. This contest has several centuries of existence and is now recognized as a cultural good of Guatemala. It was also granted a cultural award by then-president scar Berger Perdomo in the mid-2000s.

Santiago Sacatepéquez is a municipality in the Guatemalan department of Sacatepéquez. It is well known for a kite festival held here annually on November 1. Santiago Sacatepéquez is located in a valley that the Spanish conquistadores called “de Sacatepéquez” (English: Valle of Sacatepéquez) in the 1520s.

That valley was bordered by the valley of Xilotepeque on the west, those of Mixco and Las Vacas on the north, and by the Chiquimula province on the south and east.

The Guatemalan celebrations of the Day of the Dead, on November 1, are highlighted by the construction and flying of giant kites, in addition to the traditional visits to the grave sites of ancestors. A big event is also the consumption of fiambre, which is made only for this day during the year.

Guatemala Hiking

Sumpango, Guatemala Kite Festival suggestions are if you plan to attend the event. When I say the growth of the Sumpango Kite Festival, the crowds are now in the tens of thousands that attend. In order to enjoy the kite festival, I would suggest arriving as early as possible at Sumpango. If you arrive at noon, be prepared to fight your way through crowds to reach the main plaza, where you will find the kites on display.

The Sumpango Cemetery is a must-visit for anyone attending the Kite Festival. The minute you enter the cemetery, you will be greeted by hundreds of families paying respect to their lost loved ones. The color and spectacle of the cemetery still amaze me.

On the streets of Sumpango, you will find food of every type lining the streets. We have eaten street food for years and never had a problem. In the main plaza that displays the kites, you will find traditional street food lining the plaza. Again, because of the crowds, you may find yourself standing in line. No matter, the food is amazing.

Santiago Sacatepéquez Guatemala Kite Festivals is a smaller event and from my point of view a little better organized to deal with the large crowds. The spectacle of the kites and the Cemetery is very similar to Sumpango’s event. The key point I mentioned is this event is better organized to manage the crowds.

No matter your preferences both Guatemala Kite Festivals are Guatemalan events to attend
