Lake Atitlan Chocolate Factory
Chocolate has a rich history in Guatemala, with the Mayans worshiping the cacao tree and calling chocolate the “food of the gods.” Made from the seeds of the cacao tree, chocolate has been used as currency, cherished in drinks for health and vitality, and in pastries and desserts.
Today Guatemala produces over 10,000 tons of chocolate each year.

Licor Marrón Chocolate is a family run chocolate shop that specializes in traditionally made organic chocolate that is sure to satisfy anyone with a sweet tooth. Yesterday while visiting San Juan La Laguna we were lucky enough to be given a tour and it was one of the tastiest days we have had in a long time.
As we entered the store the wonderful aroma of chocolate filled the air, it was absolutely intoxicating. The front room of the factory is filled with display cases of chocolate infused with herbs, nuts, and unique flavor combinations. For a truly indulgent twist, they sell liquor-infused chocolate.
In the back room, you can take a seat and watch a demonstration that explains the fermentation and drying of the cocoa beans. After drying, the cocoa beans are roasted in small batches at Licor Marrón Chocolate. The thin shell is then cracked and the bean is removed. The beans are then stone-ground by hand and mixed with a few simple ingredients of sugar cane molasses, herbs, nuts, and fruit to created an incredible delight for your taste buds.
Enjoy this journey through the history, culture, traditions and the flavor. You can find more information on Licor Marrón Chocolate at https://www.facebook.com/licormarronChocolate/?fref=ts.
