Why Live in Guatemala

Why Live in Guatemala is a question many of my friends living in the United States still ask me after all my years of living in Guatemala. When are you moving back home, the US is no longer my home Guatemala is my home and my life.

March 3rd, 2003 I sold my technology company and my family decided to seek a better life. Escape the game we were in, the Big house, Five TVs, Leased Cars, all part of being accepted as part of the community. All about stuff, not the quality of life Guatemala opened our eyes to.

Covid 19 caused the closure of Guatemala Borders for nine months, I could have left to where? Back to the United States for what? The life I left years ago, sorry no thank you. Nothing to do with Politics, Covid 19, once you find life, real life, why go back to the life that drove me from the US.

For most Americans, Guatemala is considered a developing country. It is because we as Americans overthrew this country in 1954 over fucking Bananas by the US-backed CIA and politicians invested heavily in Chiquita Bananas. The story of Guatemala was supporting communism. No greed of shareholders and powerful politicians needing to protect their stock in Bananas, a result 250,000 Mayans were slaughtered.

Why Live in Guatemala for me after being accepted by the Mayans and Guatemalan’s is quality of life. Living on Lake Atitlan is away from the stuff, if I want the old stuff the US offered, a two-hour drive to Guatemala City, and I have access to all the stuff, areas of downtown Guatemala City reminds me of any major US city. The hotels, the clubs the nightlife, the same. Nice to visit, returning to Lake Atitlan for me, the people make it happen every day.

What is the quality of life in Guatemala for Expats considering moving here stupid stuff, is Guatemala safe, how much does it cost, where is the best place to live? Not about the beauty, the culture, the food, and most importantly the kind and loving, real people of Guatemala.

Guatemala is not for everyone, many Expats come to Guatemala and fail to become part of the culture and community and end up with other Expats who for some reason complain about the lack of services like they had in the US. Then why did you come here in the first place, Guatemala will not change for you.
