Guatemala Travel Explores Mayan Weaving Culture

Guatemala Travel Explores Mayan Weaving Culture. Guatemala Travel Reviews 2017 Explore Weaving Mayan culture Enjoyed a day hike with Jim from Lake Atitlan Tours. Enjoyed hearing about living in Guatemala and the Mayans. Also had a day trip across Lake Atitlan to San Pedro and San Juan to see weaving and artists. Had a local guide there as well. Jim and Poncho were very informative and real. Had a home hosted lunch, saw incredible weaving and felt like we got to visit and see kind and talented Mayans.

I would recommend the company and the guides. Made our experiences worthwhile and thorough. My husband can’t walk long distances and Jim made the most of our day trip. He is helpful, kind and accommodating!!

US Protection Sought for Guatemala Mayan Weaving Culture and Designs

The defense of Indigenous Mayan Weaving Designs emerged in May 2016. The defense process was  taken to the constitutional courts of Guatemala and has grown to represent weavers in eight departments in the country, representing Maya Kaqchikels, Kiches, Mams, Tz’utujiles, Pocomchís, and Sapatecos.

The Intellectual Property laws of Guatemala do not protect the rights of the Mayan Weavers Designs. This has left traditional Mayan Weavers Designs open to theft by transnational companies looking to exploit and appropriate Mayan identity.

The protesting Mayan Weavers initiated a legal process at Guatemala’s Constitutional Court to demand that Guatemala’s Congress amend the national laws that govern national industry and industrial property rights especially “in the case of textiles and Indigenous clothing to protect the Mayan Weavers Designs.”
