Lake Atitlán

Bienvenidos Lake Atitlán Guatemala! My partner, Jake, and I have recently arrived in Lake Atitlán for a few month stay, or at least that’s the plan. I have a sneaking suspicion that this landscape frequently gobbles return flights.

This culturally-rich, majestic slice of life was originally put on my radar by Do Good As You Go – a growing network of small social enterprises, cooperatives, community organizations and altruistically-oriented travelers. It didn’t take much to convince Jake and I that Lake Atitlán would be our settling spot on a (long dreamed of) multi-month adventure. And once decided, we were delighted to find no shortage of opportunity and activity to fill our days.

Of particular interest was Grow Your Own Cure, whose philosophy and practice aligned perfectly with many of my own interests. Luckily, it didn’t take much more than an email inquiry for Jim and Kara, the lovely duo behind the scenes of Lake Atitlán Tours, to graciously agree to help us out along the way (but more on that later).

So, here we are – settling into the shores of what is renowned as one of the most beautiful lakes in the world with plans to study under a herbalist, get involved in community initiatives, develop our Spanish, climb a few volcanoes and perfect our downward dogs with the best of ‘em (there are more hours in a day down here, right?).

We’ll be sharing bits and pieces of our journey here, so follow along, if you’d like, as we explore the depth and wisdom of Lake Atitlán. I loved our time with Jim and Kara they are Americans who have some how fully integrated into the local culture and are well respected by the locals. They offer one of the best experiences we have ever had traveling.
